My friend is about to embark on her vacation to The Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic. Originally, she priced it as a multi-city trip (JFK-AMS-TXL-MUC-PRG-JFK). The price for the itinerary was over $1,300 in coach.

I recommended that she consider flying into Amsterdam and out of Prague and dropping all the intermediate flight segments and use low cost carriers in Europe to fly between Berlin, Munich and Prague. Based on that advice, the price for JFK-AMS/PRG-JFK was about $700. A $600 difference. To get between AMS – Berlin, I recommended that she use EasyJet which was priced at 30 euros or approximately $45. Then I recommended her use Air Berlin between Berlin and Munich for $76 and then finally train it between Munich and Prague for 40 euros or 60 dollars. Net saving using low cost carriers after arriving in Amsterdam – $419.

So next time you are traveling around a region, consider the low cost carriers in the region. Here are some big ones by region:

• Europe: Air Berlin, EasyJet, Ryan Air, Norwegian Air Shuttle
• Asia: AirAsia (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia), JetStar (Singapore, Vietnam), Tiger (Singapore), Lion Air (Indonesia)
• India: SpiceJet, Kingfisher Red, Jetlite, Indigo
• Middle East: FlyDubai, Air Arabia, Jazeera Airways,
• Australia/New Zealand: Virgin Blue and Pacific Blue
• South America: Azul (Brazil), Gol (Brazil), Sky (Chile)

Just remember, since low cost carriers do not interline (e.g., check your bag through), make sure you give yourself plenty of time between connections or you could be struck if there’s irregular operations like weather or mechanical delays.
