Best Credit Cards To Use When Filling Up on Gas

With summer road trip season upon us, families will see an uptick on gasoline spending. Here’s a few cards that can help soften the blow of filling up the tank.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card — if you’re fortunate enough to be near a Costco, you can reap the benefits of some of the lowest gas prices in the nation. However, you don’t need to a Cotsco gas station to earn 4% cash back on fill-ups; all gas stations worldwide are eligible.

PenFed Platinum Rewards Card — PenFed Credit Union consistently has some of the best rates and rewards. You can earn a 5% rebate at gas stations with this card. To join the credit union you need to be associated with a partner program. Luckily it’s easy to sign up — currently, you can join Members of the National Military Family Association or Voices for America’s Troops for $17 to become eligible for PenFed.

We also like these other cards if you think those two are too limiting in their earn and spend. They will gain 3x points or 3% cash back — or 6x in the case of Hilton Honors points (worth about as much as the 3x points with the other cards).

Hilton Honors Surpass Card — earn 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points for each dollar of eligible purchases on your Card at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets, and U.S. gas stations.

Citi ThankYou® Premier Card — 3X Points on gas stations and travel

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express — 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations

Make sure you’re earning points for that hard earned cash you’re spending!

Why would I want 4-5% off on gas charges when I can receive an airline mile (or two) per dollar on all charges?

Especially on this site, I’m surprised that wouldn’t be weighed in the calculus….

If an airline mile is equivalent to around a 2% rebate…getting 4% back in cash can purchase 2x as many air reservations. Or, anything else you might want, or need…
