United and Delta put Tokyo on sale today for $487 from Los Angeles. Taking advantage of that fare, you can use Tokyo as a base and go to Guam and Palau for about $800.

Guam and Palau are normally very expensive to get to. Rarely does it go on sale for under $1,500 from the United States. To get this price, you have to buy it as two tickets:

• Ticket 1: Los Angeles to Tokyo
• Ticket 2: Tokyo to Guam or Palau
  • 2a: Tokyo to Guam is available as low as $288. So Los Angeles – Tokyo ($487) + Tokyo – Guam ($288) or $775 for both
  • 2b: Tokyo to Palau is available as low as $333. So Los Angeles – Tokyo ($487) + Tokyo – Palau ($333) or $820 for both.

Or you can even save more by using miles:

• Guam: Nonstop service from Tokyo with Japan Air (British Airways Avios is 10K points per direction), Delta (17.5k miles per direction) or United (12.5k miles per direction).
• Palau: Nonstop service from Tokyo with Delta (17.5k miles per direction) or United (25k miles per direction)

This does not work from Guam or Palau to the United States.
