We flew with Icelandair last year taking advantage of its generous free Reykjavik stopover option. While Icelandair isn’t a traditional full service carrier, one of the benefits that we liked about them is the lack of nickel and diming that is frequent with “low cost carriers.”
Icelandair used to offer 2 checked bags up to 50lbs for free in addition to a carry-on up to 22lbs plus a personal item. But this generous benefit is no longer available.
As of January 17th, 2017, economy tickets will only include:
- One checked bag up to 50lbs
- One carry-on up to 22lbs
- One personal item
If you purchased your ticket before January 17th, you will still have the old baggage benefit. This is in line with what traditional carriers like American, Delta, United, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France and KLM offer on their economy tickets.
Even with this reduction in benefits, in most cases, unless you travel super light (only flying with a backpack that fits under your seat), Icelandair will be cheaper than WOW Air when you factor in all the fees.
